Thomas Cronkhite, 85, used to be a Merrill Marauder. This special combat unit of Army veterans marched a thousand miles through the Burmese jungle, plagued by blood-sucking leeches, snakes, malaria, monsoons and the Japanese army. Their mission was to reopen the Burma Road, the lifeline to China.
